About us

The Cope Program

Cope is a community-based mental health and psychosocial support program designed to support refugees and asylum seekers displaced in Indonesia. Our aim is to overcome barriers to mental health support by providing a low-cost, accessible, peer-driven psychosocial support to all refugee community members.  

Our innovative task-shifting approach increases refugee skills and knowledge, overcomes obstacles to care, and prevents the occurrence of chronic conditions through: 

The Cope community program is currently delivered by refugee community members in four languages:

85% of Cope participants report feeling confident enough to facilitate their own Cope group after completing the community program.

What are the goals of the Cope program?

Create an ongoing system for identification

Create an ongoing system for identification, access, treatment, referrals, and advocacy to support the mental health needs of asylum seeker and refugee community members in Indonesia. 

Provide mental health resources

Provide mental health resources and psychoeducation to all community members, to overcome the need for more intensive treatments for chronic conditions. 

Develop the capacity of local refugees

Develop the capacity of local refugees and professionals to assist individuals experiencing mental illnesses. 

Increase access to mental health services

Increase access to mental health services through the development of a refugee and asylum seeker-specific self-guided support tool. 

Advocate for increased awareness

Advocate for increased awareness and access to support for refugee populations.
